Outdoor educational trips are an important part of every child’s development. They are also fun for both parent and kids but hectic to organize and properly set up. If your thinking about doing one with your kids, here are my 5 tips to get you ready and set:
1. Do some research
Like all trips, it is important to know exactly where you would be going, what weather to expect, what gear you would need so as to make sure that all the safety precautions are in check beforehand. Clothing would be important as different places may experience different weathers during different seasons e.g. A winter in Detroit requires one to be heavily dressed while if you take a trip to Miami, a swimsuit would be the ideal clothing. Also a new place would be better with a GPS, map or travel assistant.
2. Let them explore what fancies them
Expounding on what your child likes can bring about a better outdoor educational trip than choosing one for them on your own. Have a few choices for them in advance and let them decide on their own which one fascinates them. Children learn better when they have an interest, this will in return boost their development e.g It would be better to give your children an option to going to 5 different places, each with a distinct unique feature, then letting them choose which one they would love than just deciding for them on one.
3. Linking with others
Some local nature centers can provide your child with access to outdoor resources. Signing up your child to partake in such centers will make it easier for him/her to create meaningful outdoor learning. Also as a parent, connecting with other professionals who are nature enthusiasts can help you with making the right choices for your kids to further help them enjoy nature while learning about it.
4. Guide them to learn better
The best teachers for children are their own parents. An outdoor educational trip would be better if the parents help the children come up with better conclusions from their own observations. Example would be asking the right questions to spark them to come up with their own meaningful conclusions i.e It would be better to avoid saying “Its spring now, do you see how the leaves are starting to grow back?” but rather saying “Do you remember how the trees looked when it was snowing? what about now? What’s different?” This will help your child better use his senses and learn better through observation.
5. Let kids nurture with nature
Why wait till summer for your child to spend time with nature? You could start with that small backyard space you never used to create the perfect environment to make your child love nature. A simple garden is the stepping stone to bringing nature to your home for your kids to relate to. Raising young farmers can help them know how to take care and preserve nature at the same time gain more knowledge about plants.
With the above instructions followed you are all set and ready for an interesting and exciting outdoor educational trip.
Permaculture is the act of nurturing the nature and at the same time taking care of our needs. Organic farming is a very simple yet beneficial activity when done right. Well, many people at first see this practice as a very difficult task. This is because one has to dig the ground, prepare the soil, and grow your plants and all this while nurturing the farm. However, with a little practice and one applying the required techniques, the fruits of the applied labor and time taken are great.
One can follow the following permaculture tips to achieve a more sustainable organic farm;
Build permaculture Guilds
It is good to understand that permaculture is usually based on utilizing and shaping natural processes that is similar to that of those seen in the natural forest. In this practice, food crops are grown together with other plants that provide for human needs so as to create multiple layers of vegetation as well as a diverse environment.
Thus a good start for a long term food forest is a permaculture guild. We can define a guild as a grouping of plants, insects, animals as well as other natural elements that work together to grow symbiotically, survive and at the same time help one another to reach their fullest potential. A strong permaculture guild can be build by the act of companion planting that can be used to facilitate the smaller symbiotic relationships. This will contribute to the fully functioning of the system as a whole community.
Considering your garden space
For you to save on the water usage as well as the cost that is incurred during farming, you can consider building a Hugelkultur raised garden bed. This is a permaculture concept (Hugelkultur) in which it describes a raise garden bed that is usually filled with wood. The rotting wood contains high levels of organic nutrients, materials as well as air pockets for the roots of the plants in the bed. With time the soil usually becomes rich as well as loaded with microorganisms that are helpful for your plants.
Try sheet mulching
Sheet mulching is an activity that establishes a great foundation to be used in planting by using different layers of organic and inorganic materials so as to help the soil to build itself. You can try out by starting with slashed vegetation, followed by a layer of cardboard, then a thin layer of manure, a foot of straw, compost and then end with mulch. Also it is also important for one to regulate the amount of water that gets to your crops.
Grow the organic farming community
This is whereby you can meet up with other farmers or clients that will help you grow your business by sharing ideas and experiences that you may apply in your farm.
Permaculture gardening is all about emphasizing growing local plants that are adopted in a given area and at the same time you grow the things that you like as well as making sure that they have purpose and benefit.
We all engage in some form of communication with other people on a daily basis. This is irrespective of whether or not you are actually trying to communicate. Simply your body language, your actions and/or your facial expressions are enough to communicate something in one way or another. As humans, as long as we are around someone else, we are always communicating something. It doesn’t matter if you are speaking or not.
It is not entirely easy to achieve effective interpersonal communication. It is not always discernable that a person can fully understand what you are trying to communicate. You cannot always be sure that the person you are communicating with is not misinterpreting the meaning of your message.
First and foremost, to achieve effective interpersonal communication, you need to understand that communication, regardless of the form, is bound to happen. It is unavoidable. Not everyone, though, can fully communicate his/her thoughts and feelings. It is easier for some than it is for others.
To successfully communicate your message, you have to make sure that the person you are communicating with understands you. In order for this to happen, the other person must be paying attention. Of course, this other person will have his/her own opinion on what it is you have just said. This is beyond your control. Thus, you should take into account your tone, your body language and your facial expressions when passing your message. Even without speaking, you can say a lot with these other actions. Many people achieve an understanding of a person’s message by reading the communicator’s body language and facial expressions. As a communicator, you can know the recipient’s understanding of your message by reading his/her body language.
You should know that once you have communicated something, you cannot take it back. The way a message comes across is the way it comes across. You cannot do anything to change it if you didn’t intend it to come across that way. You can only clarify.
In order to get your intended message across, you should first think about what you want to say. When squabbling with someone, it is possible to say something you don’t mean because you didn’t think about it beforehand. Thinking before speaking is one way to ensure you are fully understood. By reading the recipient’s facial expression and/or reactions, you can tell if you have been understood or misunderstood. You can tell if you have communicated the wrong message even if this is not what you intended.
When communicating with others, you should take into account psychological, situational, relational, cultural and environmental contexts.
Taking into account psychological contexts means you should consider who the person you are talking to is and what it is they can contribute to the conversation.
The circumstances around the conversation are basically what constitute the situational context.
The relational context refers to how you react to the other people in the conversation.
The learned behaviour and rules that you contribute to the conversation are what make up the cultural context.
Environmental contexts are basically the locations of your meeting.
These contexts are all taken into account in even the very simplest communication. For example, how you salute someone will depend on all these contexts; who the recipient is (psychological), your current emotional, mental, etc situation (situational), the closeness you have with the person (relational), his/her reaction to politeness/rudeness (cultural) and an informal/formal setting (environmental). All these are taken into consideration before you say, “Hey” or “Good morning”.
The simple guidelines for effective interpersonal communication are to remember these five contexts.
We all know the importance of setting good habits in a child’s formative years, whether it be something as simple as going to bed on time to not talking to strangers. But one of the most important areas for us to teach good behaviour is in our children’s diet.
Good nutrition in these early years is incredibly important in shaping your child’s eating habits in later life. All you have to do is watch a couple of episodes of television shows like Extreme Eatersto know just how badly some parents get it wrong, the most notable of these being the grownup who would literally only eat chips! So you can see the importance about creating a positive message about healthy food and steering children away from processed and sugary foods.
Here we have summarised the key nutrition guidance for healthy children ages 2 to 11 years that all parents should take into consideration.
Realising the importance of role models is essential in creating good habits. These aren’t just the characters your children are seeing in books and television but the parents themselves. If a child doesn’t see their family eating the same healthy foods as they are then you aren’t going to be reinforcing good eating habits.
Variety Is Key
If you don’t begin to introduce a variety of foods in the first decade of a child’s life then they might struggle to accept it later on. By being diverse with fruits and vegetables then you will find that your child is a lot more willing to try new things instead of sticking to the safe foods they are used to. So remember that getting your children to eat well doesn’t have to be a chore, instead if you introduce fun and experimentation at the right age and if they see their parents enjoying it then they likely will too.
An issue with children in modern times is that food is so readily available and marketed that they sometimes lose a solid daily structure of key meals and snacks. The number of times we see children eat a bag of crisps or clutching a fizzy drink before a meal! Therefore it is important to create a typical daily structure with healthy snacks included. Children offer can be grouped into categories of those who are always willing to have a snack and drink or those who will happily ignore food until they are very hungry and it is important to recognise this in your child.
Make Eating More of an Occasion
These days time is often at a premium for a lot of families but if there is one important time that they should all come together and take their time it is at mealtimes. This is once again linked to creating good habits and being a good role model. Meals shouldn’t be rushed; instead they should be embraced as a social occasion instead of an opportunity to shovel food down. By slowing the pace a bit you will allow your child the opportunity to chew their food properly and also develop other good habits like table manners and developing social skills.
